Tamar’s half-brother, Amnon, became intensely obsessed with her. He faked an illness and requested that King David send Tamar to his quarters to prepare food for him. When they were alone, Amnon physically overpowered and raped her, despite her desperate pleas and warnings about the ruin it would cause them both. “But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her... Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the ornate robe she was wearing. She put her hands on her head and went away, weeping aloud as she went... And Tamar lived in her brother Absalom’s house, a desolate woman.” (2 Samuel 13:14, 19, 20).
Description
Dinah went out to visit the local women of the land of Shechem. A Hivite prince named Shechem saw her, seized her, and raped her. Following the assault, Shechem claimed to love her and sought to legally marry her, keeping her captive in his home while negotiations took place. In the ancient world, an assault of this nature was viewed as an attack on the honor of the victim's entire family. Dinah’s brothers, Simeon and Levi, reacted with furious indignation over the "disgrace" brought upon their sister. They deceived the men of Shechem, slaughtered the entire male population of the city to rescue Dinah from Shechem's house, and plundered the city. Dinah herself completely disappears from the narrative after being rescued, her life irrevocably altered by the trauma and subsequent violence. “Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her... They put the city to the sword, took Dinah from Shechem’s house and left.” (Genesis 34:2, 26)
